Ares had made arrangements with Loki for a portal to their destination. Hel was fully capable of doing the same, but he wanted it to be a surprise. They stepped through onto a dark, empty street. A faded sign over the door on the nearest building proclaimed the location as Eddie’s.

“What’s this?”

“You’ll see. Come on inside.”

Ares didn’t make it a habit of heading to the States often, but when he did, practically everyone in the supernatural community wanted to reconnect. He had Thoth to thank for that, the asshole mentioning to too many of their associates that he was in town.

“I kinda owe a friend a favor. He found out I was in California and asked me to take over something for him. We shouldn’t be here long.”

“And I had to dress like this because…” She gestured to her skintight, side-laced hot pants and bold red heels.

“You know, for a sorceress, you don’t care much for mystery. I thought you lot lived on things like that.”

She straightened her shoulders and tossed back her hair, the movement straining the leather bustier that barely covered her breasts. Her cleavage had never been more stunning.

“Fine, then.”

Ares admired her restraint. The Hel of the past would have cut him to the quick with few words. It hadn’t been until the later years of their “relationship” that she softened to him.

He’d thought distance would destroy that.

“That’s the spirit.” He chuckled and offered his arm.

Requiring no password for entry, the door opened without a squeak when they approached. Magic hummed in the metal that recognized the beasts inside them, sizzling harmlessly over their skin in passing.

Hel’s lips pressed tight and her left brow rose but she said absolutely nothing as he led her through the empty, worn down space. He led the way past empty shelves and dusty crates to a metal stairwell that disappeared to a lower level. The next door opened after a specific knock sequence, flooding the area with the sound of music and loud cheers. Bass thudded in the floors and walls, even vibrating through the air. The soundproofing could have only been accomplished by a work of magic. And it had been.

The Livingstons, an old and magical bloodline, owned a chunk of Los Angeles and their youngest son liked to flaunt their money on extravagant, often illegal purchases. And there was nothing more illegal than the underground fight club held in a warehouse off the Santa Monica wharf.

“It’s gonna be like old times.”

She didn’t say anything, but he saw the way her green eyes glittered. Hel never fled from battle in the past, and she’d rarely missed an opportunity to teach the younger generations of dragons. She might have turned her nose up at the venue, but deep inside she enjoyed a good fight. She reveled in the carnage, even if her bloodlust had been dulled by years of grandmotherly doting.

Ares offered a hand to her. “Come on, Hel. Have I ever let you down?”

Her gaze darted to his face and held his gaze for long enough that he wondered if he ever had.
